Overview

The Project Planning Section supports the Department’s mission by conducting location-specific studies of transportation problems and proposing solutions to meet current and anticipated future needs. Solutions are developed through consultation with regional stakeholders, and through the use of state-of-the-art engineering and planning tools. Once solutions are identified, the Project Planning Section provides technical support in efforts to resolve these issues, assisting with the programming, environmental, design, and construction processes.

The Project Planning Section is comprised of a diverse team of engineers and transportation planners with a wide-ranging skillset. The team is very adept at garnering the needs of stakeholders along with the public, in order to achieve the overarching goals of a given project. The Project Planning team brings a broad range of backgrounds and talents to provide a comprehensive approach to producing effective solutions.

Section Responsibilities

Key Project Planning Section’s responsibilities are listed below:

  • Conduct long-range planning studies to determine location-specific roadway improvement needs in regard to safety, mobility, economic competitiveness, and other goal areas.
  • Assist with the development of Federal regulatory documents, such as Interchange Justification Reports.
  • Review design plans to ensure that projects will achieve the desired outcomes.
  • Propose work zone regulations that maximize available work hours for highway contractors while minimizing delay for roadway users.
